We are all appalled by the shootings at the U.S. Army base at Fort Hood. Those of us who are interested in racial justice and human tolerance have a new burden. We need to accept that there are some individual Muslims who are in the thrall of the distorted jihadist view of their religion. We must protect ourselves as best we can. This means we cannot practice political correctness to the extreme that we pay no attention to the public pronouncements of a Major Hassan.
Yet, we must not give in and we must not allow others to give in to mass indiscriminate anger at Muslims. To do so would be morally wrong, desperately wasteful and possibly cause a level of violence that could not be contained.
The challenge is upon us.
